As USA Today explained last year, all-inclusive resorts are hugely popular worldwide for many reasons. They suggested that readers can “protect their budget with all-inclusive resorts,” and I agree with all their tips “to make the most out of your all-inclusive vacation.”
But there is one detail they forgot to mention: the resort’s fine print.
We love all-inclusives, and we’ve covered many destinations for wedding couples or special occasion travelers and sports enthusiasts, such as scuba divers and golfers. Whatever kind of all-inclusive vacation you’re looking at, review the fine print—today, I’m explaining why!
Yes, It’s a Vacation… But Don’t Forget Your Legal Rights
The last thing you might think about on holiday, especially at a relaxed or deluxe resort where everything is included, is that you’re effectively entering into a legal contract with the place you’re staying.
Most, if not all, reputable resorts have rules to ensure all guests’ safety and security. But this fine print might include something you never “signed up for,” and if you don’t know the rules in advance, it could cause vacation havoc.
Review the Terms and Conditions
Any contract you sign, such as a gym membership or cell phone, always includes terms and conditions (T&C).
I’m as guilty as anyone of signing those contracts after barely scanning the T&C. A vacation can cost quite a bit more, so it’s important to pinpoint the essentials in an all-inclusive resort T&C for your peace of mind and no problems later.
Here are things to look for in the T&C:
- are there nonrefundable deposits required upfront, and for what
- is there travel insurance offered upfront, and what happens if you decline it
- what is the onsite policy at the resort for medical situations (are the services of a registered nurse included? What about a doctor or medications if required?)
- is there a penalty charged for changing your reservation dates or accommodation type
- what happens to your booking if there is a hotel disruption (i.e., hurricane), and are you expected to accept a different property than the one you booked initially
- waiver of liability: in every instance, you must “acknowledge and agree” to all safety precautions that may include no “jumping, diving, swinging, horseplay, and rough play” in private or public pool areas and oceanfront or over-the-water-suites.
Rights of Disabled Persons
Although I genuinely regret to say this, not every all-inclusive resort I’ve covered is up-to-date with accommodating persons with disabilities, and sometimes, it’s not entirely the resort’s fault.
Sandals Ochi is a relatively affordable, fantastic party destination. Still, the resort covers a wide, incredibly hilly area, which can pose a mobility challenge in the worst-case scenario.
I always suggest that you look for an “Accessibility Guide” when you’re booking an all-inclusive resort. The fine print should include these specific details:
- number of accessible hotel rooms at the resort and accommodation category
- information on accessible bathroom facilities (in-room and public) and accessible shower facilities
- number of accessible restaurants, including information on ramps and wheelchair dining
- accessible features in pool and recreation areas
- general information on terrain (hills, sandy beaches, pathways around the resort).
For instance, I reviewed the fine print at Sandals Negril and can happily report that it offers good accessibility in rooms, restaurants, shower facilities, and an accessible beach. If required, there are standard wheelchairs available for guests and scooters available to rent.
Not Every All-Inclusive Is Available to Everyone
I’ve seen this in action, and it can be devastating, especially when there’s a big group booked at an all-inclusive resort for a destination wedding.
My point is that some all-inclusive resorts truly cater to adults only, and often, most guests are older couples who’ve paid dearly for a more tranquil experience.
Some travelers bring their young families to a destination wedding at an adults-only resort, mistakenly thinking that they can “get away with it,” especially if they haven’t read the fine print clearly stating the resort is for 18 and over (at some resorts, the minimum age is 16).
In this situation, the fallout generally means that the family has to seek alternative accommodations, and the last-minute cancellation fee can be as high as 100%.
Another issue that’s happening more is disagreements between guests and resorts about pet-friendly travel.
I love my pets like family, but reading the fine print for resort policies is crucial, especially outside of North America. It would be a gigantic logistical headache for anyone to show up at a Caribbean resort with their “fur-babe” and be told the pet is not allowed.
When in doubt, always check Resort FAQs and do a specific search on the page for “pets.”
The Fine Print Also Means the Basics
What exactly do you pack? Is there anything that’s not included at your all-inclusive resort?
The fine print for your chosen resort should contain answers to most of these basic travel questions. It’s pretty obvious, but here’s why it’s best to know all of these little details in advance:
- If you don’t abide by the resort’s dress code, you might not get access to the best restaurants that generally have a “resort evening attire” dress code in place
- If you don’t know whether spa services are included, you might expect to get that relaxation massage you’ve been dreaming about… only to realize it’s an additional charge
- Are there “quiet times” or “quiet areas” at the resort for all guests to relax and enjoy without worrying about rule-breakers? Don’t be “that guy” who ruins the enjoyment for other travelers
- Who do you tip, if tipping is even allowed? The fine print should tell you. Also, consider other people (transport drivers, spa attendants, luggage handlers at the airport) who aren’t resort employees and could use a few extra dollars to supplement their incomes.
That’s why I always take “a mo” and review the fine print, FAQs, and T&C when booking a vacation.
