Kids and Grandparents BOTH Loved It: Pirates Voyage Pigeon Forge Review

Picture this: you’re sitting in a packed arena, clutching a giant buttery biscuit, watching a sea lion pull off a better comedy routine than half the YouTubers my kids follow. Then, out of nowhere, a pirate launches himself off a 30-foot mast and swan-dives into a lagoon the size of a large hotel pool.

If you’re wondering whether your next Pigeon Forge trip should include Pirates Voyage Dinner & Show, let me save you some time—just buy the dang tickets.

ROLLING INTO PIRATE COUNTRY

We rolled into Pigeon Forge on a drizzly April evening, bellies already rumbling because—let’s be honest—dinner theater means one thing to me: food with a side of chaos. Our crew spanned ages 11 to 70, so when I say we had “all the bases covered,” I mean it.

As soon as we rounded the corner and spotted the black-and-gold Pirates Voyage building with its enormous skull-and-crossbones sign, my youngest piped up: “Dad, are there real pirates in there?”

“Just wait,” I said, “these are the only pirates in Tennessee that don’t ask for your Netflix password.”

PRE-SHOW SHENANIGANS & SETTING THE SCENE

Even before you step inside, the energy is cranked up to 11. The lobby is decked out like a pirate’s tavern, with treasure chests, skulls, and enough nautical ropes to tie down our Monster Van in a hurricane. The kids were immediately sucked into the souvenir stand, trying to convince Nana that everyone needed a foam sword for “protection.” I considered it, but then remembered how much damage a foam weapon can do in the hands of my boys.

Once the doors opened, we were ushered into a massive arena that looked like someone had dropped an entire Caribbean harbor in the middle of Appalachia. Two full-sized pirate ships sat in the middle of a glowing lagoon, and the buzz of anticipation was strong enough to make you forget you were basically in a dinner theater. (No offense to your local “Murder Mystery Nights,” but this is next-level stuff.)

THE FEAST: COME HUNGRY OR ELSE

Let’s talk food, because—let’s be honest—my love language is “all you can eat carbs.” Pirates Voyage doesn’t mess around. The meal kicked off with their legendary Voyager Creamy Vegetable Soup—the same one they ladle out at Dolly Parton’s Stampede. If you’ve never had it, imagine the world’s most comforting bowl of soup, then add a couple more cups of butter for good measure. I could eat this every day for a month and not complain. (I’d probably need a new wardrobe, but let’s not dwell on that.)

Next up: warm “Buccaneer Biscuits,” cracklin’ pan-fried chicken, sugar-cured ham, buttery corn on the cob, and mac ’n’ cheese that disappeared from the kids’ plates so fast I barely got a forkful. By the time dessert (apple turnover pie) landed in front of me, I was strongly considering raising a white flag. If you leave Pirates Voyage hungry, you’ve either made some questionable life choices or you’re on a juice cleanse.

THE SHOW: SEA LIONS, ACROBATICS, & HIGH DIVES (OH MY!)

So… about that “Fun, Feast & Adventure” tagline. I’ll admit, I was a little skeptical at first. I’ve been to plenty of shows where “action-packed” actually means “someone juggled flaming bowling pins for 90 seconds.” Not here. The storyline follows Blackbeard and Calico Jack as they lead the Crimson and Sapphire crews through epic battles—on deck, in the water, and (my personal favorite) high above the ships on swinging ropes and trapeze.

And yes, they really do high dive from the crow’s nest. I watched a guy do a full somersault off what had to be at least a three-story drop, right into the lagoon. There were trampolines, tightropes, and enough flips to make your head spin. My youngest kept elbowing me every time someone jumped, whispering, “Dad, would you do that?” (Short answer: not unless there’s a stack of liability waivers and a large insurance policy.)

But the real star of the night—for our group, anyway—was the sea lion. This guy stole the show. He danced, he waved, he even “talked back” to the pirates in a way that had the entire arena howling. I’m not saying I’d trade one of my kids for that sea lion, but if he ever needs a place to stay, our guest room is open.

The variety is wild: one minute you’re watching a pirate duel, the next you’re cheering for a troupe of acrobats bouncing across trampolines or a flock of tropical birds making a surprise appearance. It’s one of those rare shows where there’s not a single dull moment—or a single member of your group who isn’t grinning like a lunatic.

FOR ALL AGES (AND ALL APPETITES)

By the time the grand finale rolled around—a full-on pirate ship battle with cannons, acrobatics, mermaids, and more—we’d laughed, cheered, and eaten enough to warrant a nap in the van. Our group ran the gamut from middle schoolers to grandparents, and everyone left talking about their favorite part. The kids were obsessed with the high dives and the sea lion, while the adults were still arguing over whether the soup or the fried chicken was the best thing on the menu.

Would we go back? Absolutely. In fact, the kids are already plotting a return trip—and I’m not going to lie, I’m kind of hoping they need a fill-in sea lion someday.

PRO TIPS & BIG NEWS: PANAMA CITY BEACH IS NEXT

  • Book ahead: Shows sell out fast, especially weekends and holidays. Grab your tickets early if you want a good spot near the action.
  • Come hungry: The four-course feast is no joke. Don’t fill up on snacks beforehand.
  • Bring your sense of adventure: It’s loud, it’s lively, and you’ll probably end up singing along with a pirate at some point.
  • Allergies/dietary needs? Just ask—they’ve got vegetarian, gluten-free, and dairy-free meals. Vegans, you’re covered too.
  • Keep an eye out: If you’re visiting Florida soon, Pirates Voyage is opening a brand-new $60 million location in Panama City Beach in June 2025. Assuming it’s just like the one in Pigeon Forge, you’ll want to add it to your list. (Maybe you’ll see my family there—especially if that sea lion needs a road trip buddy.)

WRAP UP: PIRATE APPROVED

If you’re anywhere near Pigeon Forge and looking for a night that’ll make the whole family happy, Pirates Voyage Dinner & Show is a can’t-miss. You’ll leave with a full stomach, a phone full of blurry action shots, and at least one new favorite sea lion. As Blackbeard himself might say: Fun, Feast & Adventure™ indeed. Arrrrgh you ready?
