As anyone who’s traveled with kids knows, finding the sweet spot between “fun for everyone” and “I need a vacation from my vacation” can be elusive. When we pulled into Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort’s newest luxury offering, Osprey Pointe, I had no idea we were about to nail that balance.
Here’s the thing about Florida’s Gulf Coast: it’s stunning. But if you’ve ever inched your way through the traffic in Seaside on a sunny (or rainy) day, you know that beauty comes at a price – usually in the form of crowds, overpriced ice cream, and the feeling that you’re part of someone’s carefully curated Instagram story.

That “New Condo” Smell
When we walked into our 3-bedroom condo at Osprey Pointe, the first thing that struck me (and Sarah) was how clean it smelled. That might sound strange, but if you’ve ever walked into a vacation rental and been hit with the unmistakable funk of prior occupants, you understand why this detail matters.
The space felt brand new – modern furnishings, spacious rooms, and the kind of kitchen that makes you briefly consider actually cooking on vacation. But who are we kidding? We’re here for the amenities and the beach.
A Pool That Works for Everyone
With three boys between 11 and 14, finding activities that keep everyone happy is no small feat. The pool at Osprey Pointe struck that perfect balance – large enough that the kids could actually swim instead of just standing in a glorified bathtub, heated so no one got the shock of cold water, and with fountains that entertained some younger kids we met during our stay.
The hot tub was legitimately spacious (not the 3-person afterthought you often find), and there was always plenty of seating. If you’ve ever had to set a 6 AM alarm just to claim a pool chair, you know this is vacation gold.
Yes, There Are Actually Ospreys at Osprey Pointe
In a stroke of authenticity that I wasn’t expecting, there’s a family of osprey nesting on a perch right above the pool. From our balcony, we had front-row seats to watch these impressive birds fly to and from their nest.
The kids were legitimately fascinated, which beats the usual “I’m bored” vacation refrain.
The Sandestin Sweet Spot
This was our first Sandestin experience, and I wasn’t sure what to expect. The best way I can describe it? Peaceful. We took morning walks on wide, mostly shaded paths that wind through the property. The golf course (which we didn’t play but admired from afar) looked immaculate.
One afternoon, we rented a pickleball court at the tennis center without any hassle. Coming in March meant perfect weather – sunny enough to enjoy outdoor activities, but not so hot that you’re counting the minutes until you can retreat back to air conditioning.
Baytown Wharf: Kid-Approved Freedom
We let the boys explore Baytown Wharf, which felt safe enough that they could enjoy a taste of independence. There’s a great playground for younger kids, and my wife couldn’t resist the umbrella-covered street that’s practically designed for Instagram photos (though I’ll spare you the “hold the camera higher, no lower, wait you cut off my head” exchange that accompanied it).

The Food Situation
One night we had dinner at the Marina Bar and Grill, arriving a bit early to snag a picnic table since it’s first-come, first-served. With March Madness playing on the big screens, timing was everything.
The blackened grouper sandwich was the undisputed star of the meal, with the happy hour fried pickles coming in a close second. While you don’t get a direct sunset view, the waterfront setting and the colorful sky as the sun goes down made for a pretty perfect dinner backdrop.

The Seaside Experiment
We did make the pilgrimage to Seaside one day, because when in Rome (or rather, when on 30A), right? The crawling traffic and throngs of people wandering the picture-perfect streets confirmed what we already suspected – we’d made the right choice staying at Sandestin.
Don’t get me wrong, Seaside is beautiful and worth seeing. But the peaceful retreat we had waiting for us back at Osprey Pointe felt like the better fit for our family. Sometimes the best vacation spots are the ones where you don’t have to contend with overwhelming crowds for every experience.
The Verdict: Would We Go Back?
In a heartbeat. Osprey Pointe hits that sweet spot of being close enough to the action without being in the middle of it. The accommodations were genuinely impressive – peaceful, beautiful, modern, and everything felt brand new.
If you’re like us – wanting access to great beaches, dining, and activities but preferring to retreat to a quieter space at the end of the day – Osprey Pointe delivers. The next time someone mentions 30A, I’ll be the guy saying, “But have you considered Sandestin?”
Just remember, if you go, you’ll want to get in that pool at least once at sunset, watch those osprey make their evening flight, and for goodness sake, order the blackened grouper sandwich. Your future self will thank you.
